Indonesia Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but widely appreciated in Indonesia. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Indonesia uses plug types C and F. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless it is confirmed to be made from purified water.

Safety

Indonesia is generally safe for travellers, especially in popular destinations like Bali and Jakarta. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy areas. Natural risks like earthquakes and volcanic activity should also be considered.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings, often gentle. Use the right hand when giving or receiving items. Avoid touching someone’s head or pointing with your feet. Public displays of affection should be minimal.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops and malls are often open daily, including weekends, usually from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Languages

The official language is Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia). Many local languages are spoken across the country. English is widely used in tourist areas but may be limited in rural regions.
