Hojaldres (Latin American Puff Pastry Treats)
Hojaldres are a beloved Latin American pastry, known for their light, flaky layers and golden, crispy exterior. Perfect for breakfast, snacks, or as a delightful accompaniment to coffee or hot chocolate, these puff pastries bring a touch of homemade warmth to any table.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 3/4 cup warm water (adjust as needed)
- Oil for frying
Instructions
-
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder. Gradually mix in the vegetable oil, then add warm water little by little until a soft, pliable dough forms. Knead gently until smooth.
-
Rest the Dough
Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes to relax the gluten, making it easier to roll out.
-
Shape the Hojaldres
Divide the dough into small balls. Roll each ball into a thin circle, about 1/8 inch thick. For a traditional layered effect, fold each circle in half, then in half again, and roll gently to flatten slightly.
-
Fry the Pastries
Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat. Fry the hojaldres one at a time until golden and puffed, about 2–3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
-
Serve
Serve hojaldres warm, either plain, dusted with sugar, or alongside a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or sweet spreads like jam or dulce de leche.
Serving
Hojaldres are best enjoyed fresh, when they are light and crispy. Pair them with a warm beverage for a cozy breakfast or an indulgent snack.
