Bulgaria Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is customary in Bulgaria but not strictly mandatory. In restaurants, around 5–10% is typical if a service charge is not included. It is also common to round up the bill and tip taxi drivers and hotel staff.

Sockets and voltage

Bulgaria uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe to drink throughout the country, including in cities like Sofia.

Safety

Bulgaria is considered a safe destination for travellers. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy tourist areas and public transport. Standard precautions are recommended.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Nodding and shaking the head can be culturally reversed compared to some countries (a nod may mean “no” in rare contexts), so clarity in communication is useful.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops in cities often open daily, though hours may vary in smaller towns.

Languages

The official language is Bulgarian. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, especially among younger people.

Casual clothing is common, but modest attire is appreciated in religious sites.
