Barmbrack Recipe

Barmbrack (Irish Tea Bread)

Experience the warm, comforting taste of Ireland with Barmbrack, a traditional fruit loaf often enjoyed with a cup of tea. Slightly sweet, moist, and filled with tea-soaked dried fruit, this bread carries a special charm, especially around Halloween when it’s baked with hidden tokens for fortune-telling. Whether served toasted with butter or enjoyed plain, Barmbrack is a delightful treat for any time of year.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups mixed dried fruit (raisins, sultanas, currants)
  • 1 cup strong black tea (hot)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Soak the Fruit

Place the dried fruit in a large bowl and pour over the hot tea. Stir in the brown sugar, cover, and let sit overnight (or at least 6 hours) to plump up the fruit.

  2. Prepare the Batter

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a loaf tin. In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add the soaked fruit mixture (with its liquid) and the beaten egg. Stir until just combined into a thick batter.

  3. Bake

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf tin, smoothing the top. Bake for about 60–70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil.

  4. Cool and Slice

Allow the loaf to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Serving

Enjoy Barmbrack sliced and lightly toasted, spread with butter for a truly authentic Irish experience. Pair it with a cup of strong tea for the perfect afternoon treat.

Warm, fragrant, and full of tradition, Barmbrack brings a little taste of Ireland’s heritage to your table, making it a wonderful bread to share with family and friends.
