Bangladesh Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in Bangladesh but is not always expected in local establishments. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Tips are also appreciated by hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Bangladesh uses plug types C, D, G, and K. The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth.

Safety

Bangladesh is generally welcoming to travellers, though traffic congestion, infrastructure challenges, and petty crime can occur. In busy urban areas like Dhaka, travellers should stay alert and use reputable transportation.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings between men, though some conservative Muslims may avoid physical contact with the opposite sex. Use the right hand when giving or receiving items.

Business hours

The workweek typically runs from Sunday to Thursday. Offices usually operate from around 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Friday is the main day of rest.

Languages

The official language is Bengali (Bangla). English is commonly used in business, education, and tourism.
