Venezuela Travel Notes

Venezuela Travel Notes

Tipping

In many restaurants a 10% service charge is already included in the bill, but leaving an additional small tip (around 5–10%) for good service is appreciated. Hotel staff and porters may expect small tips, while taxi drivers usually do not expect one, though rounding up the fare is common.

Sockets and voltage

Venezuela uses plug types A and B, similar to those in the United States and Canada. The standard voltage is 120 V with a frequency of 60 Hz, so travelers from countries using 220–240 V may need a voltage converter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking. Visitors should use bottled or properly purified water, which is widely available in cities and tourist areas.

Safety

Venezuela has experienced economic and political instability, and crime rates can be high in some areas, particularly in major cities. Travelers should avoid displaying valuables, limit travel at night, and stay in well-known districts or organized tours when possible. It is advisable to monitor current travel advisories before planning a trip.

Body language

Venezuelans are generally warm and expressive in communication. Handshakes are common when meeting someone for the first time, while friends may greet each other with a cheek kiss. Maintaining friendly eye contact is normal, but politeness and respect are important in formal settings.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops and markets may open earlier and sometimes close later, especially in large cities.

Languages

Spanish is the official language of Venezuela. Numerous indigenous languages are also spoken in different regions, especially in the Amazon and rural areas. English is not widely spoken outside tourist or business environments.
