Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meatballs

In a small bowl, soak the breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, soaked breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

  2. Form and Brown the Meatballs

Shape the mixture into small, even meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. Heat butter and vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, working in batches if necessary. Remove meatballs and set aside.

  3. Make the Sauce

In the same skillet, sprinkle in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, to form a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the pan. Stir in heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce, and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

  4. Simmer the Meatballs

Return the meatballs to the sauce and simmer over low heat for 10–15 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.

  5. Serve

Serve the Swedish Meatballs hot, topped with the creamy sauce. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a touch of color.

Serving

Pair with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or lingonberry jam for an authentic Swedish experience. These meatballs bring warmth and comfort to any meal, making them a timeless favorite in Swedish cuisine.
