Enjoy the soft, fluffy delight of Priganice, a traditional Bosnian treat that’s perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a sweet snack. These fried dough balls are golden, airy, and wonderfully versatile - serve them with honey, jam, or cheese for a comforting and satisfying bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (plus extra for frying)
  • Honey, powdered sugar, or jam for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the egg, vegetable oil, and yeast mixture.

Mix until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

  2. Shape and Fry

Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium heat.

Take small pieces of dough and shape them into balls (about the size of a walnut).

Fry the dough balls in batches until golden brown on all sides, about 2–3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  3. Serve

Serve Priganice warm, drizzled with honey, sprinkled with powdered sugar, or accompanied by your favorite jam.

Priganice are perfect for breakfast, afternoon tea, or a sweet snack. Pair them with a cup of strong coffee or tea for the ultimate Bosnian treat. Their fluffy, golden perfection is sure to delight family and friends alike.
