Palusami Recipe

Palusami (Samoan Coconut Leaf Wraps)

Discover the rich and creamy flavors of Samoan cuisine with Palusami, a traditional dish made from taro leaves filled with coconut cream and onions, then baked to perfection. This comforting and hearty dish is a staple in Pacific Islander celebrations and everyday meals alike, offering a unique taste of the islands.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch taro leaves (or spinach as a substitute)
  • 2 cups coconut cream
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: chopped corned beef, fish, or other protein

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Leaves

Wash the taro leaves thoroughly and remove the thick stems. Separate the leaves and lay them flat.

  2. Make the Filling

In a bowl, mix coconut cream, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. If using protein, fold it into the mixture.

  3. Assemble the Palusami

Place a spoonful of the coconut mixture in the center of each leaf. Fold the sides over to create a neat parcel, securing with string or a toothpick if necessary.

  4. Cook the Palusami

Steam or bake the parcels in a covered dish for 1 to 1.5 hours, until the leaves are tender and the coconut cream has thickened. Traditional methods involve cooking in an earth oven or wrapped in banana leaves for extra flavor.

  5. Serve

Serve Palusami hot as a side dish or main course, alongside rice or taro.

Serving

Palusami is perfect for festive occasions, family gatherings, or as a comforting everyday meal. Its creamy, savory flavor and tender texture make it a beloved dish in Samoan cuisine, offering a true taste of the Pacific Islands.
