Mont Lone Yay Paw (Burmese Sticky Rice Balls)

Experience the delightful taste of Burmese cuisine with Mont Lone Yay Paw, a traditional dessert featuring sweet, chewy sticky rice balls filled with jaggery and topped with coconut. Perfect for festive occasions or a simple treat, this dessert is both comforting and irresistible.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups glutinous rice flour
  • 3/4 cup water (adjust as needed)
  • 1/2 cup jaggery, chopped into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • A pinch of salt
  • Banana leaves or parchment paper for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine glutinous rice flour and a pinch of salt. Gradually add water, stirring until a soft, pliable dough forms. Adjust the water or flour as needed to achieve the right consistency.

  2. Shape the Rice Balls

Take a small piece of dough (about the size of a walnut) and flatten it in your palm. Place a piece of jaggery in the center, then carefully fold the dough around it, rolling it into a smooth ball. Repeat with the remaining dough and jaggery.

  3. Cook the Rice Balls

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Carefully drop the rice balls into the boiling water. Cook until the balls float to the surface, about 5–7 minutes, then remove with a slotted spoon.

  4. Serve

Roll the cooked rice balls in grated coconut to coat evenly. Serve warm on banana leaves or a plate, and enjoy the sweet, chewy treat.

Mont Lone Yay Paw is perfect as a snack or dessert. Its chewy texture combined with the rich sweetness of jaggery and the fresh flavor of coconut makes it a beloved treat in Burmese cuisine. Share with family and friends for a delightful taste of tradition.
