Kniddelen (Luxembourgish Dumplings)

Discover the comforting charm of Luxembourg with Kniddelen, a traditional dish featuring soft, fluffy dumplings served in a savory sauce or with crispy bacon. This hearty, homey recipe is perfect for cozy family meals and embodies the warmth of Luxembourgish cuisine.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 slices bacon, diced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add eggs and milk. Stir until a sticky dough forms. If needed, adjust the consistency with a little more flour or milk.

  2. Shape the Kniddelen

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Using two spoons, form dumplings from the dough and drop them gently into the boiling water. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10–12 minutes, or until the dumplings float to the surface and are cooked through.

  3. Prepare the Topping

While the dumplings cook, melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add chopped bacon and onion, frying until golden and crispy.

  4. Combine and Serve

Drain the Kniddelen and transfer them to a serving dish. Pour the bacon and onion mixture over the top, and season with salt and pepper. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Serving

Serve Kniddelen hot as a main dish or as a hearty side. They pair beautifully with Luxembourgish sauerkraut, apple sauce, or a light salad. Enjoy the soft, comforting flavors of Kniddelen, a simple yet satisfying dish that brings the taste of Luxembourg into your home.
