Iraq Travel Notes

Iraq Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is customary in Iraq. In restaurants, around 5–10% is typical if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also common for hotel staff, drivers, and service workers.

Sockets and voltage

Iraq uses plug types C, D, and G. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless you are sure it is made from purified water.

Safety

Iraq has significant security risks due to ongoing instability and regional tensions. Travel is strongly discouraged in many areas. If travel is unavoidable, it is essential to follow official advisories, use security arrangements, and avoid public gatherings.

Body language

Greetings often involve handshakes. Use the right hand when giving or receiving items. Public displays of affection are not appropriate, and conservative behaviour is expected.

Business hours

The workweek typically runs from Sunday to Thursday, with Friday as the main day of rest. Business hours may vary and are often influenced by prayer times and local conditions.

Languages

The official languages are Arabic and Kurdish. English is limited but may be used in business and international contexts.
