Halászlé

Halászlé, also known as Hungarian Fisherman's Soup, is a beloved dish that originates from the banks of the Danube River in Hungary. This fiery red soup is a celebration of the country's rich culinary heritage, featuring a flavorful broth infused with paprika and loaded with chunks of freshwater fish and vegetables. Whether enjoyed as a hearty meal on a cold winter's day or as a centerpiece for festive gatherings, Halászlé is sure to captivate your taste buds with its bold and robust flavors.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs freshwater fish (such as carp, catfish, or perch), cleaned and cut into chunks
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 teaspoon hot Hungarian paprika (optional)
  • 2 large tomatoes, diced
  • 2 green bell peppers, diced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley or dill for garnish
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Aromatics

Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until softened.

  2. Add Paprika

Stir in the sweet Hungarian paprika and hot Hungarian paprika (if using), and cook for another minute to release the flavors.

  3. Add Vegetables

Add the diced tomatoes and bell peppers to the pot, and cook until softened.

  4. Add Water and Simmer

Pour in enough water to cover the vegetables, and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, and let the soup simmer for about 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste.

  5. Add Fish

Carefully add the chunks of freshwater fish to the pot, making sure they are submerged in the broth. Simmer the soup for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.

Serving

Ladle the hot Halászlé into bowls, and garnish with freshly chopped parsley or dill. Serve with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over the soup. Enjoy this traditional Hungarian Fisherman's Soup with slices of crusty bread or Hungarian-style dumplings for a complete and satisfying meal.

Halászlé is a quintessential Hungarian dish that showcases the country's love for bold flavors and hearty ingredients. Whether enjoyed by the riverside or in the comfort of your own home, this flavorful fisherman's soup is sure to warm your heart and soul with each spoonful.
