Guatemala Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is customary in Guatemala. In restaurants, around 10% is typical if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also appreciated by hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Guatemala uses plug types A and B (US standard). The standard voltage is 120 V with a frequency of 60 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless it is confirmed to be made from purified water.

Safety

Guatemala has mixed safety conditions. Tourist areas are generally manageable, but petty crime can occur, especially in cities like Guatemala City and around transport hubs. Travellers should avoid poorly lit areas at night and use trusted transportation.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Politeness and friendliness are appreciated. It is customary to greet people before starting a conversation.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops and markets may open on Saturdays, while Sundays are often quieter.
