Greece Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not strictly mandatory in Greece. In restaurants, rounding up the bill or leaving around 5–10% is common if service is good and no service charge is included. Small tips are also given to taxi drivers and hotel staff.

Sockets and voltage

Greece uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe to drink in mainland Greece and major cities, including Athens. On some islands, bottled water may be preferred due to taste or local supply conditions.

Safety

Greece is generally safe for travellers. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy tourist areas and public transport, especially in Athens and popular islands. Standard precautions are recommended.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Greeks are expressive in communication, and friendly conversation is normal. Personal space may be closer than in some northern European countries.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops may close for a midday break (especially in smaller towns) and reopen in the afternoon. Tourist areas often have extended hours.

Languages

The official language is Greek. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.
