Falafel (Middle Eastern Chickpea Fritters)
Experience the vibrant flavors of Middle Eastern cuisine with Falafel, a classic dish made from chickpeas, herbs, and spices, forming crispy, golden-brown fritters. Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or main course, falafel is delicious on its own, in pita sandwiches, or as part of a mezze platter.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups dried chickpeas (soaked overnight)
- 1 small onion, roughly chopped
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 3–4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
-
Prepare the Chickpea Mixture
Drain and rinse the soaked chickpeas. In a food processor, combine chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, cayenne, salt, and black pepper. Process until the mixture is coarse but holds together when pressed.
-
Form the Falafel
Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in baking powder and flour. Let it rest for 30 minutes. Shape the mixture into small balls or patties, about 1.5 inches in diameter.
-
Fry the Falafel
Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or saucepan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the falafel in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3–4 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
-
Serve
Serve the falafel warm, in pita bread with hummus, tahini sauce, fresh vegetables, or alongside a salad.
Serving
Falafel pairs beautifully with tabbouleh, pickled vegetables, or a drizzle of yogurt sauce for a complete Middle Eastern meal. Enjoy the crisp exterior and flavorful, tender interior of this beloved classic.
