Tipping

Tipping is not customary in East Timor but is appreciated in tourist settings. In restaurants, small tips (around 5–10%) may be given for good service. Tips are also welcomed by hotel staff and guides.

Sockets and voltage

East Timor uses plug types C, E, F, and I. The standard voltage is 220–240 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth.

East Timor is generally calm but has limited infrastructure. Travellers should exercise caution, particularly in the capital, Dili. Petty crime can occur, and access to medical services is limited.

Handshakes are common greetings. Politeness and respectful communication are important. Friendly interaction is typical in both urban and rural areas.

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some businesses may open on Saturdays.

Languages

The official languages are Tetum and Portuguese. Indonesian and English are also understood by parts of the population, particularly in urban areas.
