Burundi Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory in Burundi but is appreciated. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Burundi uses plug types C and E. The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or boiled water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth.

Safety

Burundi has varying safety conditions and travellers should stay informed of local developments. In the capital, Gitega, conditions are relatively stable, but caution is still advised, especially when travelling outside major urban areas.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Polite and respectful behaviour is important, particularly toward elders and in formal settings.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some businesses may have reduced hours depending on local conditions.
