Cambodia Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not traditionally expected in Cambodia but is increasingly common in tourist areas. In restaurants, around 5–10% is appreciated for good service. Tips are also common for guides, drivers, and hotel staff.

Sockets and voltage

Cambodia uses plug types A, C, and G. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless it is confirmed to be made from purified water.

Safety

Cambodia is generally safe for travellers, though petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in urban areas and tourist spots. Exercise caution in cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Standard precautions are recommended.

Body language

Greetings often involve a slight bow with hands pressed together (“sampeah”), though handshakes are also common. Respectful and calm behaviour is important.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops and markets often open daily, including weekends.

Languages

The official language is Khmer. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, while French is also used to a lesser extent.
