Ingredients
- 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz), thawed
- 2 cups walnuts or pistachios, finely chopped
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
-
Prepare the Nut Filling
In a medium bowl, combine chopped nuts and cinnamon. Set aside.
-
Assemble the Baklava
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with melted butter. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush lightly with butter. Repeat layering and buttering for about 8 sheets. Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the dough. Continue layering phyllo sheets and nuts, finishing with about 8 sheets of phyllo on top, each brushed with butter.
-
Cut and Bake
Using a sharp knife, cut the Baklava into diamonds or squares before baking. Bake in the preheated oven for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crisp.
-
Prepare the Syrup
While the Baklava bakes, combine sugar, water, honey, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
-
Finish the Baklava
Once the Baklava is baked, immediately pour the syrup evenly over the hot pastry. Allow it to soak and cool completely before serving.
Serving
Serve Baklava at room temperature, letting the layers of nuts and syrup shine. Garnish with extra crushed pistachios if desired. Perfect with a cup of strong coffee or tea, this dessert is a celebration of sweet, nutty indulgence.
