Vetkoek Recipe

Vetkoek (South African Fried Bread)

Enjoy a taste of South Africa with Vetkoek, a versatile fried bread that is soft on the inside and golden on the outside. Perfect for savory fillings like curried mince or sweet spreads such as jam or honey, Vetkoek is a comforting treat for breakfast, lunch, or snack time.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk (adjust as needed)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well. Gradually add warm milk and melted butter, kneading until a soft, elastic dough forms. Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

  2. Shape the Vetkoek

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into small balls, about the size of a golf ball. Flatten each ball slightly with your hands to create thick discs.

  3. Fry the Vetkoek

Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Carefully place the dough discs into the hot oil, frying a few at a time to avoid overcrowding. Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 3–5 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  4. Serve

Serve Vetkoek warm, stuffed with your choice of fillings. For a savory option, fill with curried mince, cheese, or cooked chicken. For a sweet treat, spread with jam, honey, or syrup.

Serving

Pair Vetkoek with a fresh salad or a cup of tea for a truly South African experience. The soft, fluffy interior and golden crust make each bite a delightful comfort food moment.
