Saudi Arabia Travel Notes

Saudi Arabia Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is common in Saudi Arabia but not mandatory. In restaurants, leaving around 5–10% is customary if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also appreciated for hotel staff, drivers, and delivery workers.

Sockets and voltage

Saudi Arabia uses plug types G and A/B (British and US standards are both found). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 60 Hz, so travelers may need a plug adapter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe but not commonly used for drinking. Most residents and visitors prefer bottled or filtered water, which is widely available.

Safety

Saudi Arabia is considered relatively safe with low levels of street crime. However, visitors must strictly follow local laws and regulations. Public behavior is regulated, and violations can lead to fines or legal consequences.

Body language

Handshakes are common between men. Physical contact between unrelated men and women in public should be avoided. Using the right hand when giving or receiving items is considered polite.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Sunday to Thursday from about 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Businesses may close briefly during daily prayer times. Friday is the main day of rest.

Languages

Arabic is the official language of Saudi Arabia. English is widely used in business, tourism, and urban areas.
