Experience the soft, airy texture and slightly crisp crust of Samoon, a traditional Middle Eastern bread that perfectly complements stews, dips, and grilled dishes. This homemade version brings the authentic flavors of the Levant straight to your kitchen, ideal for breakfast, sandwiches, or as an accompaniment to your favorite meals.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
Instructions
-
Prepare the Dough
In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and olive oil, mixing until a soft dough forms.
-
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
-
Shape the Samoon
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into an oval loaf, slightly pointed at the ends. Place the loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between them. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
-
Bake
Preheat the oven to 220°C (430°F). Optional: brush the tops with a little water for a shinier crust. Bake the loaves for 15–20 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
-
Serve
Let the Samoon bread cool slightly before serving. Slice open to enjoy with dips like hummus or labneh, or use it for sandwiches filled with your favorite meats and vegetables.
Serving
Samoon bread pairs beautifully with grilled meats, fresh salads, or hearty soups. Its soft interior and crisp exterior make it a versatile staple for both everyday meals and festive gatherings.
Enjoy the authentic taste of Samoon, a bread that brings warmth, flavor, and tradition to your table.
