Pretzels Recipe

Experience the soft, golden-brown goodness of homemade pretzels, a classic German treat that balances a slightly chewy interior with a perfectly crisp crust. Perfect for snacking, serving with mustard, or enjoying fresh out of the oven, these pretzels bring a taste of traditional German baking into your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F / 45°C)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 10 cups water
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Coarse salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter, and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 8–10 minutes. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  2. Shape the Pretzels

Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and lightly grease them. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist into a classic pretzel shape.

  3. Boil the Pretzels

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil. Carefully lower each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on prepared baking sheets.

  4. Bake

Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until deep golden brown.

  5. Serve

Allow pretzels to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with mustard, cheese dip, or your favorite spread.

Serving

Pretzels are perfect as a snack, party appetizer, or alongside German sausages and beer for an authentic experience. Freshly baked, they are soft inside with a satisfying chewy bite and a golden, slightly crisp crust.
