Momo Recipe

Momo (Nepalese Dumplings)

Experience the vibrant flavors of Nepal with Momo, a beloved dish featuring delicate dumpling wrappers filled with savory meat or vegetable mixtures. Often steamed or fried, these dumplings are traditionally served with a spicy tomato-based dipping sauce. Momo brings together rich spices, tender filling, and a comforting texture that makes it a favorite across South Asia.

Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup water (approximate, as needed)
For the Filling (Chicken Momo)
  • 1 pound ground chicken (or substitute with pork, beef, or vegetables)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 cup cabbage, finely shredded
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the Dipping Sauce (Achar)
  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 3 dried red chilies (or to taste)
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon roasted sesame seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Gradually add water, kneading until a smooth, firm dough forms. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  2. Make the Filling

In a mixing bowl, combine ground chicken, onion, cabbage, green onions, ginger-garlic paste, soy sauce, sesame oil, cumin, coriander, salt, and pepper. Mix well until evenly combined.

  3. Shape the Momos

Divide the dough into small balls (about the size of a walnut). Roll each ball into a thin circle, about 3 inches in diameter. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each wrapper. Fold the edges together, pinching to seal in your preferred shape (round or half-moon).

  4. Steam the Momos

Lightly oil the steamer tray to prevent sticking. Arrange the momos so they don’t touch each other. Steam for about 10–12 minutes, or until the wrappers become slightly translucent and the filling is cooked through.

  5. Prepare the Dipping Sauce

Heat oil in a small pan and sauté garlic and chilies until fragrant. Add tomatoes and cook until soft. Transfer to a blender, add roasted sesame seeds and salt, and blend into a smooth sauce.

  6. Serve

Serve the hot momos with the spicy tomato achar on the side.

Serving

Momos are best enjoyed fresh from the steamer, accompanied by a warm cup of tea or a chilled drink. They make a perfect appetizer, snack, or light meal. Pair with extra sauce for an authentic Nepalese experience.

Delight in the comforting warmth and rich flavors of Momo, a dish that captures the heart of Himalayan cuisine with every bite.
