Mate Tea Recipe

Mate Tea

Discover the invigorating flavors of Mate Tea, a traditional South American beverage celebrated for its bold, earthy taste and natural energy-boosting properties. Whether enjoyed in a morning ritual or shared with friends, Mate Tea offers a unique and refreshing experience.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons dried yerba mate leaves
  • 1 cup hot water (not boiling, around 160–180°F / 70–80°C)
  • Optional: honey or sugar to taste
  • Optional: lemon or mint for added flavor

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mate

Place the yerba mate leaves in a mate gourd or a heatproof cup. Tilt the gourd slightly to create a small mound of leaves on one side.

  2. Add Hot Water

Pour a small amount of hot water over the leaves, letting them absorb the liquid for a few seconds. Avoid pouring boiling water directly to prevent bitterness.

  3. Steep and Serve

Slowly fill the gourd with the remaining hot water. Let the tea steep for 3–5 minutes. Taste and adjust sweetness with honey or sugar if desired. Add lemon or mint for a refreshing twist.

  4. Enjoy

Sip the Mate Tea slowly, savoring its earthy flavor. Refill the gourd with hot water multiple times, as the leaves can be reused until the flavor diminishes.

Serving

Mate Tea is traditionally shared among friends, passing the gourd around for a communal experience. Enjoy it as a natural energizer and a ritual of connection. Mate Tea delivers a unique combination of bold flavor and gentle stimulation, making it a beloved beverage across South America and beyond.
