4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons (10 g) sugar

1 teaspoon (5 g) salt

2 teaspoons (7 g) instant yeast

1 ¼ cups (300 ml) warm water

4 cups (1 liter) vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a sticky dough forms.

Knead: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Let It Rise: Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours or until it doubles in size.

Shape the Dough: Punch down the dough and divide it into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Let them rest for 10–15 minutes.

Fry the Magwinya: Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium heat. Fry the dough balls in batches, turning them occasionally, until golden brown on all sides (about 3–5 minutes). Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Serving: Serve Magwinya warm with butter, jam, or honey for a sweet treat. For a savory option, pair them with cheese, mince, or a curry dip. This recipe makes approximately 12–15 Magwinya.
