Kletski is a traditional dish from Eastern Europe, often enjoyed in countries like Ukraine, Belarus, and Poland. These dumplings are typically made from a simple dough of flour, eggs, and water, shaped into small pieces and boiled. Kletski can be served with a variety of broths, meats, or vegetables, and they are a hearty, satisfying dish perfect for cold weather. Whether you enjoy them in a rich broth or with a creamy sauce, Kletski provides warmth and comfort in every bite.
Ingredients:
For the Dumplings:
1.1 lb (500 g) all-purpose flour
2 large eggs (0.2 lb / 90 g)
½ cup (120 ml) water
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
For the Broth:
6 cups (1.5 liters) chicken broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian option)
1 medium onion (0.2 lb / 100 g), chopped
1 tablespoon butter
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Dumpling Dough In a large bowl, combine the flour, eggs, salt, and vegetable oil. Gradually add the water while mixing the dough until it becomes smooth and firm. Knead the dough for about 5–7 minutes, then cover it with a towel and let it rest for 15 minutes. After resting, roll the dough into a log shape and slice it into small pieces, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length. You can use your hands to shape them into small oval dumplings, or leave them in chunks for a more rustic look.
Step 2: Cook the Dumplings In a large pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil. Drop the dumplings into the boiling broth one by one. Once they rise to the surface, cook for an additional 3–4 minutes. Remove the dumplings from the broth and set them aside.
Step 3: Prepare the Broth In a separate pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown, about 5–7 minutes. Pour the sautéed onions into the broth, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for another 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Step 4: Combine and Serve Add the cooked dumplings to the broth and allow them to simmer together for an additional 10 minutes. Taste the broth and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
Serving: Serve the Kletski hot in individual bowls, with the dumplings submerged in the flavorful broth. This dish is perfect on its own or accompanied by a side of sour cream or freshly chopped herbs for an extra touch of flavor.
Kletski is a versatile and comforting dish that offers a taste of Eastern European tradition. Whether served in a rich broth or with a creamy sauce, these dumplings will warm you up on any chilly day. Easy to make and incredibly satisfying, Kletski is a dish that everyone will love.
