Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef or lamb
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 can (400g) chopped tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (optional, for heat)
  • 3–4 eggs (optional)
  • Additional fresh parsley or cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Kefta (Meatballs)

In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, chopped onion, garlic, cumin, paprika, cinnamon, coriander, salt, pepper, parsley, and cilantro. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated. Shape the mixture into small, bite-sized meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.

  2. Make the Sauce

Heat olive oil in a tagine or large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, turmeric, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and simmer for 5–7 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.

  3. Cook the Kefta

Gently place the meatballs into the sauce. Cover and simmer over low heat for 20–25 minutes, turning the meatballs halfway through cooking to coat them evenly in the sauce.

  4. Optional: Add Eggs

If desired, make small wells in the sauce and crack eggs into each well. Cover and cook for 5–7 minutes, or until the eggs reach your preferred level of doneness.

  5. Serve

Garnish with fresh parsley or cilantro. Serve hot with crusty bread, couscous, or rice.

Serving

Kefta Tagine is best enjoyed with fluffy couscous or warm bread to soak up the rich, spiced tomato sauce. The combination of tender meatballs, aromatic spices, and optional eggs makes it a visually stunning and satisfying Moroccan classic.
