Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup water (adjust as needed)
- 1 tablespoon oil or ghee (optional)
- Extra flour for rolling
Instructions
-
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt. Gradually add water while mixing with your hand or a spoon until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
-
Shape the Chapati
Divide the dough into small, equal-sized balls (about the size of a golf ball). Lightly flour a clean surface and roll each ball into a thin, round disc about 6–8 inches in diameter.
-
Cook the Chapati
Heat a skillet or flat pan over medium-high heat until hot. Place a rolled chapati on the skillet and cook for 30–40 seconds until bubbles start to form. Flip and cook the other side for another 30–40 seconds. Flip once more and gently press with a spatula or cloth to help it puff up. Remove from the skillet and keep warm in a clean cloth while cooking the remaining chapatis.
-
Serve
Serve chapati warm with your favorite curries, dals, or vegetable dishes. Chapati can also be enjoyed as a simple snack with butter or chutney.
Serving
Chapati brings the heart of Indian home cooking to your table - soft, comforting, and irresistibly versatile.
