Bajiyos Recipe

Bajiyos

Bajiyos, also known as Bajiyas or Bajiya, are traditional Somali lentil fritters, enjoyed as a popular snack or appetizer. Made with a blend of ground lentils, onions, garlic, and spices, these crispy, golden bites are a favorite during Ramadan and other festive occasions. Bajiyos are often served with a side of chutney or a tangy dipping sauce, making them a flavorful and satisfying treat that’s perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (0.45 kg) split chickpeas or mung beans (soaked overnight)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp (5 g) ground cumin
  • 1 tsp (5 g) ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 g) turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 g) chili powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 g) baking soda
  • 1/4 cup (0.03 kg) fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Lentil Mixture

Drain the soaked lentils and place them in a food processor. Pulse until you get a coarse paste, adding a little water if necessary to help the mixture come together. Transfer the lentil paste to a mixing bowl.

  2. Mix in the Ingredients

Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, chili powder (if using), baking soda, chopped cilantro, and salt to the lentil paste. Mix well to combine all the ingredients evenly.

  3. Shape the Fritters

With your hands, form small balls or patties from the mixture, about 1-2 inches in diameter. Flatten them slightly to ensure even cooking.

  4. Fry the Bajiyos

Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the shaped bajiyos into the oil, frying them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry each side for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  5. Drain the Fritters

Remove the fried bajiyos from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Serving

Bajiyos are best served hot, straight out of the fryer, with a side of chutney, tamarind sauce, or a spicy yogurt dip. They make an excellent snack for tea time, a starter for a meal, or a delightful addition to your Ramadan iftar spread. The crisp exterior and flavorful, spiced interior make them a crowd-pleaser that’s sure to disappear quickly.

Bajiyos are more than just a snack - they’re a taste of Somali heritage, combining simple ingredients with aromatic spices to create something truly special. Whether you’re celebrating a holiday or just craving a savory treat, these lentil fritters are a delicious way to bring Somali flavors into your home.
