Ukraine Travel Notes

Ukraine Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in Ukraine but not always required. In restaurants and cafés, leaving around 5–10% of the bill is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also customary for hotel staff, taxi drivers, and tour guides.

Sockets and voltage

Ukraine uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz, so most European devices will work without a converter, though visitors from other regions may need an adapter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking in many areas. Bottled or filtered water is widely used and recommended, especially for visitors.

Safety

Due to the ongoing conflict related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, security conditions vary significantly across the country. Many regions are affected by military activity, and travel to Ukraine may involve significant risks. Visitors should closely follow official government advisories and local safety guidance.

Body language

Handshakes are a common greeting, especially between men. Maintaining polite eye contact during conversations is typical. It is customary to greet elders first and show respect in formal interactions.

Business hours

Offices usually operate Monday to Friday from about 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Shops, supermarkets, and shopping centers may remain open later, especially in large cities.

Languages

The official language is Ukrainian. Russian is also widely spoken in many regions, particularly in urban areas. Other minority languages such as Hungarian, Romanian, and Polish are used in certain regions.
