Sklandrausis is a traditional Latvian dessert that has been enjoyed for generations. 1 cup (225 g) sugar

1/2 cup (115 g) butter, softened

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp cloves

1/2 cup (120 ml) milk

1 cup (240 g) mashed potatoes

Jam or fruit preserves (plum or carrot are traditional)


In a large mixing bowl, combine the rye flour, wheat flour, sugar, softened butter, egg, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, milk, and mashed potatoes. Knead the dough until it comes together and is smooth. Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each portion into a thin circle. Press the dough circles into individual tart molds or a lined baking tray, forming a thin crust at the bottom and up the sides. Spoon jam or fruit preserves into each tart shell, spreading it evenly over the bottom. Use a fork to create a decorative lattice pattern on top of each Sklandrausis. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the Sklandrausis for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before serving.
