Hurmašica is a traditional Bosnian dessert featuring delicate semolina cookies soaked in a sweet syrup. Known for its melt-in-your-mouth texture and subtle flavors, this dessert is a staple during celebrations and family gatherings, bringing a touch of sweetness to any occasion.
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
1/2 cup (60 g) semolina
1/2 cup (120 g) butter, softened
1/2 cup (120 ml) yogurt
1/4 cup (50 g) sugar
1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract
1 teaspoon (5 g) baking powder
For the Syrup:
2 cups (400 g) sugar
2 cups (500 ml) water
1 slice lemon
Instructions:
Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, semolina, baking powder, and sugar. Add the softened butter, yogurt, and vanilla extract, mixing until a soft dough forms.
Shape the Hurmašica: Take small portions of the dough and shape them into oval cookies. Press lightly with a fork to create a pattern on top.
Bake the Cookies: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden.
Make the Syrup: While the cookies bake, prepare the syrup. Combine sugar, water, and the lemon slice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Soak the Cookies: Once the cookies are baked, pour the warm syrup over them while they’re still hot. Let the cookies absorb the syrup for at least 2 hours.
Serving: Hurmašica is best served chilled or at room temperature. These cookies are perfect for pairing with a cup of coffee or tea. This recipe yields approximately 20 pieces.
Hurmašica is a timeless Bosnian treat that perfectly balances sweetness and texture. Whether for holidays or an afternoon indulgence, these syrup-soaked cookies are sure to impress.
