Conch Salad is a fresh and flavorful Bahamian delicacy made with raw conch, citrus juices, and vibrant vegetables. This dish is a staple in the Caribbean, offering a perfect balance of tangy, spicy, and savory flavors. It’s light, refreshing, and ideal for warm-weather dining.
Ingredients:
For the Salad:
1 lb (0.45 kg) fresh conch, cleaned and diced
½ cup (0.12 liters) lime juice
½ cup (0.12 liters) orange juice
1 small red bell pepper, finely chopped
1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
1 small red onion, diced
1 medium tomato, diced
1 small cucumber, diced
1 Scotch bonnet pepper, finely chopped (optional, for heat)
¼ cup (0.06 liters) fresh cilantro, chopped
Salt and black pepper to taste
For Garnish:
Extra lime wedges
Fresh parsley or cilantro
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Conch Clean the fresh conch thoroughly and remove any tough parts. Dice the conch into small bite-sized pieces for better texture and flavor absorption.
Step 2: Marinate the Conch Place the diced conch in a bowl and pour in the lime and orange juice. Let it sit for at least 15-20 minutes to allow the acidity to tenderize the conch.
Step 3: Mix the Salad Add the chopped bell peppers, onion, tomato, cucumber, and Scotch bonnet pepper to the bowl. Mix everything well to ensure even distribution of flavors.
Step 4: Season and Serve Add fresh cilantro, salt, and black pepper to taste. Toss the salad again and let it chill for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with extra lime wedges and fresh herbs.
Serving: This recipe serves approximately 4 people. It is best enjoyed chilled and served with crackers or alongside grilled seafood.
